Frequently Asked Questions About Stroke Recovery Acupuncture
Can Acupuncture Help Stroke Recovery?
Acupuncture may help support stroke recovery by addressing symptoms such as weakness, muscle tightness, pain, numbness, balance concerns, fatigue, and overall quality of life. Many people use acupuncture alongside physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and medical care as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation plan.
When should you start acupuncture after a stroke?
As soon as possible. The timing depends on the individual, medical stability, and recommendations from your healthcare team. Some people begin acupuncture shortly after discharge from the hospital or rehabilitation, while others seek care months or years later to address lingering symptoms. Treatment may be beneficial at different stages of recovery. Most patients who start right after being discharged from the hospital get the best results. The patients who find acupuncture years after their stroke wish they had found it sooner.
Is acupuncture safe after a stroke?
Acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by a licensed and trained practitioner. Treatment is adapted to the patient’s overall health, medications, mobility, and stage of recovery. If you have specific medical concerns, we recommend discussing treatment with your healthcare provider.
How many acupuncture treatments are needed for stroke recovery?
The number of treatments depends on factors such as the severity of symptoms, how long ago the stroke occurred, and individual recovery goals. Because neurological recovery often happens gradually, treatment plans may involve more frequent visits initially, followed by reassessment as progress is made. At our clinic, we start post stroke patients with 12 treatments and then reassess to create a plan for continuing care.
What to Expect During Stroke Recovery Acupuncture
In stroke recovery acupuncture, a personalized plan will be created and acupuncture needles will be placed in points around the body to help with neurological recovery. There are over 365 acupuncture points to choose from. Points are selected based on your overall health. Different treatments are available depending on how patients respond. We use research backed methods like scalp acupuncture which have been shown to improve post-stroke outcomes.
Each appointment is one hour long. I will stay with you in the room and continue doing treatment for THE ENTIRE HOUR. This is not a clinic where the needles are applied and you are resting in the room alone. Healthcare needs human connection and that is why patients will receive the undivided attention of the provider for the hour during their appointment.
During your first appointment, a complete health history will be reviewed. There will be a thorough explanation of the treatment and what you can expect to feel. After consent is given, treatment will be provided. My goal is to be gentle yet effective, so all efforts will be made to ensure the patient feels comfortable with the treatment.
Depending on the severity of the patient’s condition, treatment may be done once a week up to several times per week. After symptoms are more under control, most patients move to treatments once every week or other week to maintain progress. Results vary for everyone, but we will try our absolute best to get you back as much function as we can. There will be advice given for lifestyle habits, diet, and emotional regulation so you can promote your own self care between treatments.
