Have you been told that you just have to deal with your period? Many women have been told that painful, irregular, or difficult periods are simply something they have to live with.

Solutions for Period Pain

My patients tell me they use ibuprofen or hot water bottles to help with the pain. Sometimes they tell me they just have to power through because they have work or family responsibilities that don’t allow them to take a break.

If your period regularly disrupts your work, sleep, social life, or ability to be present for the people you love, it’s worth exploring whether something can be done.

How can acupuncture and Herbal Medicine help?

At Tong Shen TCM Clinic, I work with women experiencing a variety of menstrual and women’s health concerns, including:

  • Painful or intense menstrual cramps
  • Headaches or migraines before or during menstruation
  • Short, long, or irregular menstrual cycles
  • Having difficulty in the days leading up to your period (commonly called PMS which means ‘pre-menstrual symptoms’)
  • Heavy or disruptive periods
  • Missing work or canceling plans because of period symptoms

Patients who used acupuncture to help their periods

I’ve seen patients who chose acupuncture experience meaningful changes in their quality of life.

1. One patient came to me with intense menstrual cramps and texted me the next day saying:

“My cramps were basically non-existent afterwards.”

2. Another patient was having her period about every 21 days. After several months of regular treatment, her cycle lengthened to around 30 days—giving her a much more predictable cycle and a significant improvement in her quality of life.

3. One of my patient’s who typically experienced a headache before her period. After treatment, she didn’t need to take medication for that headache that evening.

4. A patient went on hormonal birth control to stop her period. Instead, she experienced continuous bleeding that wouldn’t stop. Her fatigue made it difficult to stay awake at work and made her stop going to the gym. After using acupuncture and Chinese herbs, the continuous bleeding stopped, she regained her energy, and got back to the gym.

These are individual patient experiences, and everyone’s situation is different. But if you’ve been thinking, “My period is just something I have to deal with every month,” there may be a solution to help you improve your life!
